Routes of Transmission of AIDS
By R4H | December 25, 2007
There are many individuals who are ignorant about the ways or mechanisms of transmission of HIV virus.
Here are the Routes of Transmission of AIDS:
Sexual Transmission (vaginal, anal, oral) (0.1 - 1.0%)
- Heterosexual
- Homosexual
Through Infected Blood
- Blood transfusion : 90-95%
- Intravenous drug use : 0.7%
- Occupational exposure (needle stick, cuts, splashes) during surgeries or lab procedures : 0.3%
Mother to Child (Perinatal) - 20-40%
- In-utero
- During delivery
- Breast Feeding
So the most efficient is infected blog transfusion. But Sexual intercourse accounts for the majority of transmission because of its increased frequency of acts.
Factors contributing to increased transmission:
- High viral load in the source : As in advanced & untreated HIV infection, acute co-infection with other illness.
- Susceptibility of exposed person to inflammation or disruption of skin or Mucosa as in Sexually transmitted infection.
- Immune status of the exposed person
Prevention of HIV transmission via sexual route:
- Take prompt and complete treatment of STI (Sexually transmitted infections)
- Seek treatment for genital tract inflammation
- Use condoms during sexual intercourse
- Avoid multiple sex partners and risky partners
- Practice safe non-penetrative sex
- Avoid combining sex with alcohol and drugs
- Discuss sexual issues (i.e. infidelity concerns) with partner
